Academic Resource Center open

August 28, 2009

Columbus, IN – Indiana University-Purdue University, Ivy Tech Community College, and Purdue University College of Technology in partnership with the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Community Education Coalition are proud to announce the opening of the Academic Resource Center.

The ARC is located in Room LC1616 in the Center for Teaching and Learning in the Columbus Learning Center.

Within the ARC, academic assistance is available in writing, math, and science. The no-cost tutoring is open to all IUPUC, Ivy Tech, and Purdue College of Technology students, faculty, and staff. The center is staffed by IUPUC and Ivy Tech faculty members and trained student tutors.

No appointment is needed (except for Fridays) for writing and math tutoring, but science tutoring is currently by appointment only. Individuals desiring personal appointments may schedule private sessions by calling 314-8757.

For individuals seeking help with writing, assistance is provided at any stage of the writing process.  Help is available with understanding an assignment, brainstorming ideas, creating an outline, designing a thesis, developing organization, making an argument, or polishing a paper.  While this should not be viewed as a proofreading or editing service, tutors can help visitors learn those skills.   Visitors needing writing assistance should bring the assignment instructions, the instructor’s name, and the working draft of the document.  Visitors need to be ready to read through the assignment with a tutor and discuss concerns.  Writing resources are also available in the ARC for visitors to take with them so they can continue working on assignments after visiting the ARC.

Visitors to the ARC seeking assistance in math need to bring their textbooks and calculators with them.  Visitors are also encouraged to bring additional math course materials with them that might also be helpful for the ARC staff, such as the course syllabus.  Visitors will receive math assistance either individually or in small groups.

The ARC also provides assistance to students in science courses such as anatomy, physiology, general biology, chemistry, and physics.  Science courses covered vary from semester to semester.  Please call the ARC at 314-8757 for a list of science courses for which tutors are available.
