Faculty Colloquium Friday

October 14, 2009

IUPUC faculty members Larita Killian, Ed.D., and Kimdy Le, Ph.D., will lead a public lecture Friday about local government structure in Indiana.

The lecture, “Revisiting Local Government Structure in Indiana,” will begin at noon in Room CC176 (MBA/Executive Education suite).

“The U.S. has a complex structure of local government, with multiple types of entities with overlapping jurisdictions,” Killian said. “Some scholars say that this complex structure confuses citizens and renders them incapable of monitoring their government officials and holding government accountable. Other scholars argue that a multiplicity of local governments helps to control cost by introducing “competition” among governments, and that having many local entities allows citizens to “shop” for communities with the basket of government services they prefer.”

Based on their research, Le and Killian will discuss citizens’ perceptions of which governments serve them, and their perceived familiarity with the operations and finances of various local  governments.

The lecture is part of the IUPUC Faculty Colloquium Series. It is free and open to the public.

Killian is an assistant professor of accounting for the Division of Business. Le is an assistant professor of psychology for the Division of Science.
