Faculty members' paper to be featured in journal
Columbus, IN – IUPUC faculty member Kate Baird, Ph.D., and Purdue College of Technology faculty member Joe Fuehne, Ph.D., recently submitted a co-written paper to the Technology Interface Journal.
The paper, “A Multi-Disciplinary Summer Camp: LEGO Mindstorms for Students and Teachers,” will be featured in the Spring 2009 issue of Technology Interface Journal.
In their paper, Baird and Fuehne introduce the idea of a summer camp that increases elementary and middle school students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math subjects and careers. At the camp, students would work with programmable robots made from LEGO bricks. Teams of students would be presented with challenges that require the use of light and touch sensors, as well as planned and strategically implemented programming to solve.
Teachers at the camp would engage in professional development opportunities that emphasize teaching science and math through inquiry based instruction.
Baird is a clinical assistant professor of science education in the IU School of Education at IUPUC.
Fuehne is an associate professor of mechanical engineering technology for Purdue College of Technology Columbus.
