Students present at Governor's Conference

November 20, 2009

IUPUC students Sue Breeding and Crystal Reynolds presented at the Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism.

During their presentation, “Learning About Community Service through an Alternative Spring Break,” the students described the 2009 IUPUC service learning project in which nineteen students partnered with Housing Partnerships Inc. to renovate three local homes during their spring break. The project was a collaborative effort between two service-learning classes, a business class studying non-profit organizations and a liberal arts class studying writing services for nonprofits.

At the Governor’s Conference, the students discussed objectives and outcomes achieved, the educational value of service learning, and the social interaction and networking they gained while working together during spring break.

Students who participated in the 2009 alternative spring break are serving as team leaders and are helping plan activities for a similar project for the 2010 spring break.  The academic component of the Spring 2010 class will focus on challenges in governance of non-profits.
