Professors present at international symposium

November 23, 2009

IUPUC faculty members Larita Killian, Ed.D., and Fredricka Joyner, Ph.D., presented papers at the Assessment Institute in Indianapolis in October.

Killian gave a presentation on leveraging community resources to improve learning and assessment in accounting. She described four activities used in upper- and lower-division accounting courses. The activities involve internal controls, use of financial statements, the governmental and not-for-profit budgeting process, and interpreting financial statements and ratios to a third party.

“Students apply classroom concepts to an authentic, workplace setting and receive feedback from a working professional,” Killian said.

Joyner presented “Integrating Emotional Intelligence Competency Assessment into the MBA Curriculum to Drive Personal and Professional Development.” The presentation focused on the ways in which assessment milestones are used throughout all three years of the MBA curriculum to both develop and assess personal and professional development.

The Assessment Institute is an international symposium that draws participants from many countries. It is the nation’s oldest and largest event focused exclusively on Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education and is designed to provide opportunities for: individuals and campus teams new to outcomes assessment to acquire foundation knowledge about the field; individuals who have worked as leaders in outcomes assessment to extend their knowledge and skills; those interested in outcomes assessment at any level to establish networks that serve as sources of support and expertise beyond the dates of the Institute.

Killian is an assistant professor of accounting, and Joyner is a clinical assistant professor of business, for the IUPUC Division of Business.
