Instructors, student promote reflective writing

IUPUC faculty members Katherine Wills, Ph.D., and Tom Clerkin, Ph.D., and business student Alejandra Solis recently presented at the E.C. Moore Symposium at IUPUI.

The presentation, “Combining Team Simulation and Reflective Writing Practice: Pedagogical Pastiche and Student Learning,” described how blending a business simulation game and composition reflective writing practices could improve student learning. The presenters argued that these reflective practices, in part, have helped Clerkin’s student teams win six global Business Strategy Game competitions.

The Business Strategy Game is an online exercise where class members are divided into teams and assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in head-to-head competition against companies managed by other class members.

“Having this opportunity to present at the E.C. Moore symposium gave me the chance not only to increase my academic experience but also to understand the importance of my classroom experiences,” Solis said. “The combined results of the game and the reflective writing helped each team to comprehend the current situation of their own company and the whole market, then helped them to adjust and plan ahead in order to meet goals for the following year.”

Clerkin is an assistant professor of business for the Division of Business. Wills is an assistant professor of English for the Division of Liberal Arts. Solis is a senior business major.
