April 6, 2010

IUPUC faculty member Crystal Walcott, Ph.D., recently presented at the annual Associate of Mathematics Teacher Educators in Irvine, Calif.

The presentation, “Calculator use on National Assessment of Educational Progress: A look at fourth- and eighth-grade mathematics achievement,” discussed the appropriateness of a calculator as a tool for solving problems on the NAEP exam. The NAEP mathematics assessment is administered every odd year. In 2009, 173,300 4th graders and 167,300 8th graders participated in the assessment.

Walcott has been analyzing NAEP data since 2003. During that time, she has co-written 10 research articles and given eight research talks at national and regional mathematics education conferences.

Walcott is an assistant professor of mathematics education in the IU School of Education at IUPUC.
