Education instructor co-writes chapter

April 22, 2010

IUPUC faculty member Crystal Walcott co-wrote a chapter in the 2010 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics yearbook.

Walcott and Indiana University Professor of Mathematics Education Peter Kloosterman wrote the book’s sixth chapter, “What We Teach Is What Students Learn: Evidence from National Assessment.”

The book is the 72nd edition and is titled “Mathematics Curriculum: Issues, Trends, and Future Directions.”

The preface of the book describes the book as reflecting “some of the many issues that the field is currently discussing, so it serves as both a record of current advances and a summary of challenges regarding curriculum. We hope that it will both guide and stimulate thinking about where we have been, where we are, and where we need to go.”

The Yearbook is organized to acknowledge the various forms of curriculum that shape the grades K–12 mathematics program, including efforts to achieve common core standards.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education supporting teachers to ensure equitable mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students through vision, leadership, professional development and research.

Walcott is an assistant professor of mathematics education for the IU School of Education at IUPUC.
