IUPUC featured on architecture map

May 25, 2010

The Columbus Area Visitors Center will feature IUPUC artwork “Transformations” and “Discovery” in its latest architecture map/guide. The Visitors Center will sell these maps to the thousands of visitors who visit Columbus every year.

Discovery was installed in 2007 as the first permanent sculpture on the IUPUC campus. The nearly 12,000-pound granite sculpture features a floating and spinning planet Earth atop a stack of three massive books. “Discovery,” designed by artist Kusser Granitwerke of Germany, was made possible through the generosity of Mike and Phyllis Ryan, who are Columbus residents and world travelers. The sphere is made of New Belfast Black granite from South Africa and the books are made of granite from the Bavarian Forest in Germany.

Transformations is the centerpiece of the Reeves Sculpture Plaza, located in front of the IUPUC building. The plaza, made possible by a significant restricted gift from the Reeves Foundation will create a front door to campus. Transformations, created by nationally-renowned artist Howard Meehan, features a nearly 30-foot tall stainless steel cylinder highlighted by three panes of lighted glass. The arced wall of the plaza features an inscription of a quote from Benjamin Disraeli: “A University should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning.”
