Indiana University retreat shaping student leaders

May 26, 2010

After six days at Bradford Woods, Kristen Brasher discovered who she is as a leader.

Brasher, of Seymour,  was one of three IUPUC students who attended Indiana University’s LeaderShape Institute, a seminar that teaches young people how to become extraordinary leaders.

“The experience I had at LeaderShape was an unforgettable one. I learned a lot about how I present myself and how I act on a day to day basis,” said Brasher, a junior business major. “Every day was different - different activities planned, different lessons learned.  You learn a lot about yourself, others, and working together as a team.”

Brasher, Ryan Wooley and Evelyn Swift, joined 60 other students from all of the IU campuses for the week-long, intensive training.
Each day of the leadership retreat focused on a single topic that related to leadership qualities and practices.

Topics included:
• Building community
• The Value of One, The Power of All
• Challenging What Is, Looking to What Could Be
• Bringing Vision to Reality
• Living and Leading With Integrity
• Staying in Action

In addition to the daily curriculum, special guests, including Fortune-500 CEOs and national leaders in education, government, and the nonprofit sector, spent an evening with participants discussing the tough issues leaders face.

According to http://www.leadershape.org/, “The LeaderShape® Institute prepares young people to change their worlds by providing the tools needed to achieve new insights, improve relationships, build more effective teams, and ultimately enhance society.”

Wooley, of North Vernon, is a freshmen business major. Swift, of Columbus, is a freshman nursing major.
