Education instructors to present in Turkey

June 9, 2010

IUPUC faculty members Kate A. Baird, Ph.D., and Allison A. Howland, Ph.D., will present at the World Congress World Council of Comparative Education Societies in Istanbul, Turkey, June 12 through 19.

Baird and Howland will give two presentations based on papers written by Baird and Howland, and fellow IU School of Education at IUPUC faculty members Deb Winikates, Aija Pocock, Ilknur Kelceoglu, and Crystal Walcott.

The first presentation, “Practice in Practice: Creating Transformative Teacher Education Programs in Collaboration with Professional Development Partner School,” will focus on the relationships between the IU School of Education at IUPUC and K-6 schools in the region.

According to their research, “the most powerful programs require teacher candidates to spend extensive time in schools throughout the program, examining and applying the concepts and strategies they are simultaneously learning about in their courses.”

To provide high quality clinical work, IUPUC has partnered with several K-6 schools in the region. These partnerships create priceless opportunities for professional development as well as opportunities to share technology and instructional resources.

The second presentation, “Re-Imagining Teacher Education in a Global Society: Assessment of Teacher Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions,” will feature knowledge gained through IUPUC’s recent accreditation by the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education.

“This presentation focuses on developing assessment tools for measuring learning outcomes in an Elementary Teacher Education program whose graduates face rapidly changing teaching contexts with diverse student populations,” said Deb Winikates, head of the IU School of Education at IUPUC.

The presentation will include results from several years of data collection of teacher candidate performance and experiences related to developing assessment tools that measure pre-service teacher knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
