Film screening to illustrate impact of domestic violence

October 4, 2010

The IUPUC Alumni Association and Student Council, in partnership with Bartholomew County Domestic Violence Action Team, will show the film “Once Were Warriors” at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26, in the Learning Center Lecture Hall.

A critically acclaimed independent film from New Zealand, “Once Were Warriors” (1995) depicts the impact of domestic violence on the entire family unit. It follows a period of several weeks in a family’s life, showing the effects of frequent violent outbursts by an alcoholic father.

The screening will be followed by a brief discussion by a panel of local law enforcement and judicial system representatives. The panel will discuss how various aspects of the film relate to real-life situations they have seen in the Columbus community. There will also be time for audience questions and comments.

The film is intended for adult audiences, as it contains profane language and graphic portrayals of physical and emotional violence and sexual assault.

The purpose of the IUPUC Alumni Association Film Series is to raise awareness of and encourage discussion about a variety of social issues. IUPUC, as a part of the system of higher education in the Columbus community, is pleased to offer this program through its growing Alumni Association.

This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended by calling 812-314-8632 or by sending an e-mail to bjtaulbe@iupuc.edu.
