Students give back

February 16, 2010

IUPUC has received a generous grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support a service-learning project scheduled for March.

Students from Business, Liberal Arts, and other academic majors will study the role of non-profit agencies in Bartholomew County with an emphasis on governance practices.  During the campus’ spring break, students will participate in an “alternative spring break,” working with Housing Partnerships, Inc. to remodel homes.

This year’s service-learning project builds on the successful 2009 prototype, which included IUPUC students and faculty donating 468 hours of service to HPI.

The service-learning project is led by professors Larita Killian (Business) and Katherine Wills (Liberal Arts.)

The grant from Duke Energy Foundation will provide food and materials for students throughout  the 2010 project.  Besides supporting the material requirements of the project, the Duke Energy grant signifies to students that the community supports their educational goals and values their commitment to community service.

“Students have a very positive reaction when they learn that Duke Energy is providing their meals and materials.  Their faces light up with the knowledge that someone in the community notices and supports their work,” Killian said.

The service-learning project is based on IUPUC’s commitment to giving back to the local community.
