Business instructor studies technology-based firms

March 4, 2010

IUPUC faculty member Erica Berte, PhD., recently submitted articles to two international business journals.

Her first article, “The impact of national cultures on business performance,” was submitted to the International Journal of Cross Cultural Management. The article was the result of a study examining how cultural dimensions impact the performance of technology-based startup firms.

“The data analysis showed that the technological capability of TBSF is higher in the US than in Brazil,” Berte said. “We also found that the external networks were more developed in Brazil than in the US. This confirms our prepositions that in collectivistic cultures it is easier for TBSF to develop external networks than in individualistic cultures.”

Berte co-wrote her second article, “The lessons learned from the unique characteristics of small technology-based firms,” with Leonel Cezar Rodrigues, and Martinho Isnard Almeida, both of Brazil. The article was published in the International Journal of Management Reviews.

The goal of this study was to identify how characteristics of small technology-based firms, their unique combination of internal capabilities, structure and processes, influence strategy formulation.

“The study’s main results indicate the founder’s technical expertise shapes the business, mission and vision,” Berte said. “Lack of resources allows limited activities in strategy formulation, with few matching capabilities analyses or benchmarking studies. STBFs favor competitive analysis almost exclusively in developing a market positioning strategy without regard for other methods.”

Berte is an assistant professor of management for the IUPUC Division of Business.
