Connecting for Lunch Series: Modernist Women Writers and War

April 26, 2011

Local residents are invited to attend the Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) Alumni Association’s "Connecting for Lunch Series" on Tuesday, May 10.

The event will feature lunch and a discussion by Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, assistant professor of English, about her new book, Modernist Women Writers and War.

Modernist literature spans the first half ot the 20th century. It is characterized by its experimental nature, search for truth and the nature of reality, intellectualism, and its responses to the changing modern world. During the May 10 luncheon, the up-and-coming IUPUC professor will explore the implications of feminine literary representations of 21st century war and trauma.

Goodspeed-Chadwick’s book was published in January by Louisiana State University’s prestigious LSU Press. It examines the work of three prominent, avant-garde writers, including Gertrude Stein, during WWI and WWII.

"Initially, I became interested in the subject of war and women writers because there was a lack of scholarly attention to it in American modernist literature. I began to explore feminist responses to war and women’s representations of it in their writing and I quickly found myself focusing on writing produced during the World Wars," she explained.

During this key period in American history, the work of each woman reflects her individual effort to create space in a field that at that time was dominated by men. Their unique perspectives make significant contribution to literary studies of modernist writing.

RSVPs are requested. Call 812/314-8632 or e-mail bjtaulbe@iupuc.edu to reserve your space for this free event featuring one of IUPUC's faculty members.

The discussion begins at noon and will be held in Room 1400 of the Columbus Learning Center. It is free and open to the public.
