Indiana University Pre-Nursing Courses Available in Jackson County

April 26, 2011

Students in Brownstown, Seymour, Crothersville, and other Jackson County communities are encouraged to register now for pre-nursing elective courses to be held at the Jackson County Learning Center (JCLC) this fall. The three-credit courses are offered by Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC). “Our goal is to make nursing courses convenient for students who live in Jackson County,” explained Dr. Beth Sharer, head of the Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON) program at IUPUC.

According to Sharer, more nursing professionals with four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees are needed for positions in hospitals, clinics, schools, and other organizations throughout south central Indiana.

The nursing courses currently offered at the Jackson County Learning Center include:

  • NURS-B 104 | Power Up: Strategies for Academic Success (3 cr.) This course explores nursing as a major and assists students in gaining essential skills for academic success and in developing the ability to make use of university resources. Topics include time management, stress management, critical thinking, developing support networks, communication skills, learning styles, and academic responsibility. Teaching and learning strategies will incorporate campus technology and library resources as tools for completion of course requirements.
  • HPER-H 160 | First Aid and Emergency Care (3 cr.) Lecture and demonstration of first-aid measures for wounds, hemorrhage, burns, exposure, sprains, dislocations, fractures, unconscious conditions, suffocation, drowning, and poisons, with skill training in all procedures. Successful completion of this course also results in a current CPR provider certification.

“These courses satisfy part of the admission requirements for nursing students who want to complete their BSN degree through the Indiana University School of Nursing on the IUPUC campus,” reported Sharer, who noted that registration for fall classes has begun.
