Information Session on ESL Program to be Held Oct. 1

Adults who want to improve their English proficiency are invited to a free information session at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

IUPUC will offer two new English as a second language (ESL) options next year. The evening classes will begin in January.

The first option is an eight-week certificate program for developing general English proficiency. The 1.5 hour evening classes will meet twice a week for eight weeks.

Course content will include:

  • Conversational English, everyday expressions, and vocabulary
  • A focus on listening comprehension and fluency
  • Understanding American English idioms
  • An exploration of the cultural dimensions of communication
The second, more intensive option is a 15-week program designed for degree-seeking or non-degree seeking individuals who want to improve their English proficiency for academic or professional success. Comprised of intermediate and advanced courses, the program will focus on:
  • Reading comprehension and vocabulary development
  • English pronunciation
  • Writing and grammar
  • Presentation skills needed for successful verbal and nonverbal communication in the classroom or workplace
The information session will be held in CC Room 170 on the IUPUC campus, located at 4601 Central Avenue near Columbus Municipal Airport.
