Two English As A Second Language Options Offered Beginning June 4

Non-native speakers of English can increase their general proficiency in the language with two English as a second language (ESL) classes at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) this summer.

The eight-week noncredit series will help participants improve conversational, everyday English comprehension and fluency. Both classes are appropriate for ESL speakers with limited working proficiency in English. They are designed for maximum student-teacher interaction in a supportive classroom environment. Participants will earn a certificate of completion.

General English Proficiency: June 4 through July 30

These 1.5 hour classes are split into two levels: Basic ESL Level 1 and Basic ESL Level 2. They cover content including:

  • Conversational English, everyday expressions, and vocabulary
  • Listening comprehension and fluency
  • Understanding American English idioms
  • Exploration of cultural dimensions of communication

Basic ESL Level 1

This series is for those who proficiency includes minimal mastery of English. Classes are offered in morning and evening sessions:

  • Mornings: Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Evenings: Tuesday and Thursday, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Basic ESL Level 2

This series is for those with greater proficiency in conversational English.

  • Afternoons: Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 1:30 p.m.
