Faculty & Students to Teach Partners in Education (PIE) Workshops this Fall

IUPUC faculty are continuing the university’s nine-year partnership with the Mill Race Center’s Partners in Education (PIE) initiative by teaching noncredit workshops on a variety of topics for adults this fall.

  • September 13, 10 to 11:30 a.m. 
    HOW TO READ POETRY & SOME OF THE GREATEST POEMS EVER WRITTEN
    Columbus Learning Center, LC Room 1400 (Summerville Room)
    Instructor: Dr. Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, associate professor of English and director of the Office of Student Research


    Discover strategies to interpret poems in responsible and ethical ways. Participate in lively analyses and discussion of the process and collaboratively produce your own close readings of poems. Includes a resource packet of texts for use in class and to take home for continued literary interpretation. Cost is $10.

    RELATIONAL WELLNESS FOR OLDER ADULTS

    Instructor: Dr. Annibal Torres, assistant professor of psychology, Mental Health Counseling Program


    Healthy relationships are positively correlated human well-being, improved health outcomes, and increased overall satisfaction. Discuss and explore how older adults can successfully develop optimal relational wellness. Examine how relational wellness is applicable to older adults. Learn an action model to start the journey toward relational wellness. Cost is $10.

    FINDING THE GOOD IN OTHERS’ FAITHS

    Instructor: Joe Emerson, retired adjunct professor of religious studies


    Newspapers regularly carry frightening accounts of atrocities committed by religious fanatics. Isn’t it time to see the good qualities of world religions and what makes them attractive? Sessions will include Confucius and Eastern religions, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam. Cost is $35 for four sessions.

    A HISTORIC LOOK AT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRIES

    Learn how relationships between Middle Eastern countries have evolved by considering the economic, political, cultural, ethnic, and religious dynamics that have shaped the region. Cost is $10.

    Instructors: Alisa Hill and Shawn Jarvis, Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling graduate students


    Combined with healthy eating, restful sleep, and exercise, mental stimulation can help reduce or delay symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is an integral part of healthy living. Learn how to utilize “mind benders,” interactive games and puzzles, and other tools to stimulate your brain. Cost is $10.

    CHANGES IN THE BRAIN WITH AGING

    Instructor: Dr. Gary Felsten, associate professor of psychology and associate dean for academic affairs

    The human brain changes over our lifespan. Research shows aging brains may be more resilient than previously thought. Learn approaches to maintaining and improving brain health and function as part of the aging process. Continuing research is also providing hope for those with brain and spinal cord injuries, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and strokes. Cost is $10.

    LIVE BETTER, SPEND LESS, AND SAVE MORE

    Instructor: Bill Haeberle, lecturer, Division of Business


    Learn the basics of spending and saving. Topics include benefits from dollars spent, allocation of cash flow, personal cash flow statements and balance sheets, difference between assets and liabilities, and the personal capitalization ratio from the instructor’s book. Cost is $10.
