In September of 2007, Evans became the ninth president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He serves on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), and the Federal Reserve System’s monetary policymaking body.

In the United States there are 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks. All 12 banks, and the Board of Governors in Washington, DC, make up the nation’s central bank. As head of the Chicago Fed, Evans oversees 1,400 employees in Chicago and Detroit; employees that conduct economic research, supervise financial institutions, and provide payment services to commercial banks and the U.S. government.

Before Evans 2007 appointment, he was the director of research and senior vice president and supervised research on monetary policy, banking, financial markets, and regional economic conditions. Prior to that, Evans was a vice president and senior economist with responsibility for the macroeconomics research group.

His research has been published in a number of publications, and Evans has taught at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in economics from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Evans is in Columbus, Ind. to deliver the keynote address at this year’s Annual Meeting of the Columbus Economic Development Board (EDB). The EDB serves as the economic development office for Columbus and all of Bartholomew County, Indiana.
