Pride Friday and Welcome Week officially kicked-off classes at IUPUC

September 1, 2015

The official kick-off for Welcome Week began with over half of the 300 new Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUC) students attending Pride Friday and the New Student Convocation.

Incoming students were welcomed for the 2015-16 academic year on Friday, August 21, with the Pride Walk at 9 a.m. Traditionally, faculty and staff align along a designated path that new students follow to the convocation tent as they are cheered and applauded by the aligned members. Dr. Sandra Miles, Director of Student Affairs says that, “Events like New Student Convocation, Pride Friday, and Welcome Week are all efforts to acclimate the newest members of our community to our campus in a warm and engaging way. Through these and many other initiatives, we hope to attract and retain the highest caliber student to IUPUC. We will continue to evaluate our efforts to enhance and expand the first year experience at IUPUC.” In the ceremony introduction, Dr. Miles thoughtfully stated that students begin and conclude their academic journey in a celebratory walk.

Dr. Laurence Richards, Interim Vice Chancellor and Dean at IUPUC offered the welcoming remarks an introduction to students. He discussed the importance of education, and reminded students to be present, and take full-advantage of the preparatory opportunities for their success. Student Makala Willman is the student government association president at IUPUC and expressed the benefits of getting involved on campus. Ashley Dieter, Lead Peer Mentor and Greicy Patino, Campus Activity Board discussed the various campus traditions and Dr. Sandra Miles, Director of Student Affairs encouraged students by expressing that faculty and staff are “Here For You.” At the conclusion of the ceremony Dr. Kevin Jones, Assistant Professor of Management, gave a dynamic presentation to students on “Making Your Education Count!”
