IUPUC to host third annual Hunger Banquet

November 16, 2015

IUPUC will host the third annual Hunger Banquet at 4 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 4:15 – 5:45 pm in the Columbus Learning Center, Room 1200 (Summerville Room).

Hunger is a global epidemic that affects people of all ages, but is most devastating to children; globally it is estimated that every 5 seconds a child dies from hunger-related issues. The Hunger Banquet is a compelling event with an intent to increase the awareness of hunger, hunger that even exists within Bartholomew County.

In a 2015 report from the Washington Post, author Roberto A. Ferdman conveyed that most people from the United States think the poor have it easy. Conversely, the poor are much less likely to have health insurance and are much more likely to be the victim of a crime. They receive a lesser level of education, and they do not have the same food options as the more fortunate. Inequality starts in the crib, and it plays out even in what babies of different socioeconomic backgrounds are fed. And that, says Ferdman, is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Hunger Banquet event demonstrates socioeconomic differences through a simulated exercise. As attendees arrive, they are randomly selected into three social classes of lower, middle, and upper-class groups. The lower class receive a modest meal of rice or soup, the middle class is offered a buffet with limited options, while the upper-class group is seated at beautifully decorated tables and served a delicious three-course nutritious meal.

Elizabeth Kessler, Love Chapel’s executive director, will speak on hunger in the Columbus community and how people can help feed their neighbors. She will explain how easily families and individuals fall into poverty and what factors prevent them from regaining self-sufficiency.

Dr. Sandra Miles believes this is one of the most important events hosted on campus. “It is our responsibility to develop and educate empathetic global citizens,” she said. “We host this event near the Thanksgiving holiday so it can serve as a reminder to our students how important it is for us to consider those less fortunate.”

Join us for this unforgettable event that will leave you viewing hunger in a whole new way. This free event is co-sponsored by IUPUC’s Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Leadership and Community Service. It is requested that attendees bring a nonperishable food item that will be collected at the event and donated to a local food pantry.

Parking is free, and space is limited. Those interested in attending may register at www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4fa8ae2dabf49-hunger
