Kroot Corp. donates funds for equipment at IUPUC’s chemistry and biology labs

January 8, 2016

Kroot Corporation has pledged a generous donation designated to purchase equipment for Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) chemistry and biology labs.

In October 2015 Kroot owner, Art Kroot, toured IUPUC. During his visit, he met with chemistry professor James Mendez and student worker Jessica Caldwell. Mendez said, “The Department of Chemistry provides an opportunity for professors and students to advance their knowledge of chemistry through learning experiences.

A well-equipped laboratory with modern instrumentation is essential to the academic success of students.” After the October tour, the Kroot family generously donated an undisclosed amount of funds designated towards the purchase of equipment in the chemistry and biology labs at IUPUC. The donated funds will go towards the acquisition of the following items:

3D printers to support Mendez’s ongoing research into the applications of 3D printing in science education. Students in business and education classes also use 3D printing.

A filament extruder to recycle the plastic used by the 3D printers.

Digital balances and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for use in the chemistry lab.

Dr. George Towers, Head of the Division of Science, expressed his appreciation of the Kroot donation. “On behalf of the Division of Science and IUPUC, we are very grateful for Mr. Kroot’s generosity. His gift allows our faculty to expand science education at IUPUC in important ways.”
