IUPUC 2016 Webinar: Sexual Assault Prevention and Education

March 29, 2016

Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUC) student leaders have organized webinars. The first presentation is titled: Rape Culture: Defining, Identifying, and Changing Rape Culture Norms. IUPUC Student and Feminism Club President Michaela Wischmeier and Dr. Mahri Irivne, from Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUI) will host this online event on Thursday, Mar. 31, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sandra Miles, Ph.D. Director, Student Affairs and University Ombudsman shares, “This is a wonderful opportunity for one of our students to showcase the broad array of student talent we have here at IUPUC as well as address a very important topic. This webinar will be advertised through IU system wide and possibly beyond.”

The presentation provides attendees with definitions and examples of what a “rape culture” looks like, and discuss the common connections between possible “battering cultures” or “stalking cultures.” Attendees will learn about the societal values and beliefs that characterize rape cultures, and learn about how rape myths create harmful and unhealthy social norms that contribute to perpetration. The presenters will address implications for prevention of sexual violence and other forms of violence by discussing necessary changes in culture norms, language, and media representations of violent behavior.
