IUPUC student spotlight: Kentrina Freeman

May 13, 2016

Westport, Indiana resident, Kentrina Freeman, was a junior in 1989 at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC). She returned as a non-traditional student and was not deterred by the knowledge that when she was a junior many of her classmates were not yet born. Today, Freeman anticipates graduating in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a concentration in Arts and Humanities. Her academic achievements include making the Dean’s list in the Fall of 2015 and in her senior year achieved a 4.0 GPA.

Although already impressive, there is more to add to Freeman’s story. When all of her children attended IUPUC, she felt overjoyed. Currently, she is sharing her college experience with two of her children. Son, R. Lance Freeman, is a junior in the School of Mechanical Engineering, and her daughter B. Susannah Freeman is a sophomore who is applying for the Indiana University School of Nursing at IUPUC. Her oldest daughter, Kayla Freeman, graduated from IUPUC in 2014 and is now working towards her doctorate degree at the Indiana University Kelly School of Business.

Freeman shares that her greatest experience occurred when her daughter, Susannah, asked to take classes with her over the course of two semesters. “It was a totally awesome experience!” Additionally, her sister, Deana Brown, attends IUPUC part-time, and they have taken classes together.

After graduation Freeman hopes to obtain a position working within the community of Columbus in a role that will help others improve their lives through education and life choices. This type of position seems ideal for Freeman, who has already proved to be an inspiration to so many.
