Dr. Sandra Miles, Director of the Office of Student Affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC), accepted a two-year term with the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education as a board member for NASPA Center for Women. The Center is an international organization that examines the issues relevant to women in higher education and is a source of leadership, scholarship, professional development, and advocacy for women in student affairs as well as female students.

Dr. Miles began her term on May 1 and her responsibilities as a board member include:

  • Meet in-person at the NASPA Annual Conference and in teleconferences approximately three times per year as a full board
  • Serve on at least one active standing committee (Professional Development, Outreach, and Scholarship and Recognition) and are encouraged to contribute to additional workgroups, sub-committees, and short-term projects as needed
  • Promote and support efforts of the Center for Women

The selection process proved to be extremely competitive with high-quality applications, and the Board was impressed with Miles application materials. Kirsten Freeman Fox, Board Chair for the Center for Women shares, “I am truly looking forward to working with Miles and appreciate her willingness to continue to share her time, knowledge and experiences with NASPA’s Center for Women. I know that she has much to contribute. It is through the involvement of members like Miles that we have been able to create the programs and resources for our members, which come from our Association.”

As chief student affairs officer and university ombudsman for IUPUC, Dr. Miles holds a plethora of accomplishments. During her tenure, a dramatic increase in overall student satisfaction in co-curricular programming has occurred. Students reported an increase in the perception of quality of student activities from 51 percent in 2011 to the current 83 percent. She has implemented co-curricular learning outcomes for all events, programs, and university services.

Dr. Miles has successfully implemented the first phase of the campus-wide sports team and established two university speaker series featuring nationally ranked speakers for the first time in campus history.

Under her direction she planned, executed, and moderated the 2015 City of Columbus Mayoral Debate. This community outreach reflected positively on the university as a whole.
