The Clothesline Project display at IUPUC honors victims of domestic violence

October 3, 2016
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, student members of the Feminism Club and Office for Women extension at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) will create a visual display on the Serengeti Lawn from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a clothesline of color specific shirts, to represent the multiple forms of abuse, in honor victims of domestic violence. The intention is to send messages of hope and encouragement to survivors of the violence.

The ICADV.org reports that one out of three women and one out of four men experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. The Clothesline Project was created as an effort to allow survivors to speak out and represent their stories to the world, while honoring victims and lives lost to domestic violence.

According to Dr. Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, “We have many people to thank for this important marker of domestic violence awareness and sensitivity. I am continually impressed by the dedication, activism, and creativity of IUPUC students, among whom are the remarkable members of Feminism Club at IUPUC, as well as the activism and talent of our Office for Women Program Assistant. The IUPUC community rallied together for this event, and it shows IUPUC’s commitment to social justice issues. I’m proud to be a part of Feminism Club and IUPUC!”

Michaela Wischmeier is the Program Assistant for the OFW extension at IUPUC. She shares, “The Clothesline Project is representative of IUPUC and the Columbus community as a whole working together to educate each other, and support victims and survivors of domestic violence. I am honored to belong to a campus that works to support work with social justice issues, like domestic violence awareness.”

We hope that everyone on campus, including students, staff, faculty, and members from the community of Columbus, will view the display on October 5.
