After achieving a Master of Science degree from Indiana University, Edna V. Folger began a career in teaching during the late 1920s at Central (Columbus) High School. For more than 46 years she taught math including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to Columbus students.

In 1982 an award was created, bearing Edna V. Folger’s name, and funded by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce and the Arvin Foundation. The awards intent was only to honor Folger but raise awareness about the immeasurable influence teachers have on their students and to recognize the image of teachers as significant community role models.
