The 2017 Excellence in Diversity Award winners were announced at the IUPUC Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event

High school students, parents, civic leaders, business executives, and residents were invited to join Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) students, faculty, and staff on Monday, Jan. 16 to honor the life and lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Dr. Martin Luther King day provides an opportunity to reflect and re-energize in the struggle for civil and human rights. Community and members of the IUPUC campus came together to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., and to recognize the winning individuals or groups who have actively contributed towards a positive difference in diversity and inclusion.

The 2017 Excellence in Diversity Award award recipients includes the internal recipient Aimee Zoeller, lecturer of sociology and coordinator of the sociology program at IUPUC. The external recipient was presented to The African-American Fund of Bartholomew County and was accepted by chairperson Tom Harmon.

Dr. Reinhold Hill, vice chancellor, and dean shared “The beneficiaries of IUPUC’s 2017 Excellence in Diversity awards are recognized for their contributions through leadership on internal and external projects that positively impact the IUPUC campus and the Columbus community and surrounding region.”

Annually, persons or organization nominate or self-nominate by using the designated form found on the IUPUC website: www.iupuc.edu/about/administration-leadership/services-resources/diversity-council. Nominations are encouraged from individuals or groups of faculty, staff, students, or community members.

Nominees must meet at least one of the following criteria:

Engage in meaningful diversity activities beyond one’s professional responsibilities to encourage excellence through inclusion in the IUPUC community.

  • Display leadership in advancing diversity on campus and in the community.
  • Demonstrate efforts that foster a more inclusive and equitable learning and work environment.
  • Show evidence of inclusive teaching and program development beyond one’s responsibilities.
  • Conduct research and creative activity related to the experiences, realities, and contributions of persons from diverse populations.
  • Provide leadership in programming, training, or other experiences which serve to advance diversity and inclusion at IUPUC. ?
