Data Privacy Day event held at IUPUC

February 20, 2017

The Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUC) Office of University Information Technology (UITS), Office of Women’s Studies, Office of Student Research, and the Feminism and Spectrum clubs sponsored a Data Privacy Day (DPD) presentation in the Columbus Learning Center on Wednesday, January 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The national DPD annual date is Saturday, January 28.

The information table was open to the public and offered online safety tips and tricks, handouts, pamphlets, T-shirts, and more.

According to staysafeonline.org, the United States first recognized the Data Privacy Day in 2008 as an extension of the celebration in Europe. DPD celebrates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty
dealing with privacy and data protection.

Brandi Rund, UITS support services team lead, registered IUPUC with DPD which added IUPUC to the list of international data champions. Under registration, IUPUC has made the commitment towards a dedication to respecting individual privacy, safeguarding data, and enabling user trust.

Dr. Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick is an associate professor of English, adjunct associate professor of Women’s Studies, and director in the Office of Student Research at IUPUC. Goodspeed-Chadwick shares, “It’s terrific that IUPUC has been added to the list of Data Privacy Day Champion Organizations on StaySafeOnline.org because data privacy is an issue that we all have to acknowledge and address, from faculty to staff to students.”

“IUPUC is going the extra mile to make itself a social justice champion in connection with data privacy at Data Privacy Day at IUPUC, under the leadership of Brandi Rund, because the DPD event will include information about data privacy and women’s safety,” Goodspeed-Chadwick added.
