IUPUC Biology Club hosts guest speaker events

The Biology Club at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) is currently hosting Careers in Science guest speaker sessions. Speaker sessions not only introduce students to the various careers opportunities available to graduates of science programs, but they are also fun for people interested in learning about science even though science is not their career of choice. 

Student members of the IUPUC Biology club spent most of January and December organizing, contacting scientists, and arranging dates. The speaker list includes a variety of experts that range from medicine to entomology to chemistry.

Listed are the scheduled speakers with a brief description of their talk’s focus:

Monday, Feb. 6 | Dr. Michael Rosenfeld
Dr. Michael Rosenfeld spoke on his career in medicine. He included the academic requirements necessary to becoming a medical professional; recommended educational institutions for individuals interested in neurology, and offered his personal insights into the business practice of a neurologist.

Thursday, Mar. 2 | Giorgia Auteri
Giorgia Auteri is an ecologist that focuses on bats, from the University of Michigan. As a guest speaker, Auteri shared some compelling facts about bats. In her presentation, she shared her educational requirements to becoming an ecologist, her lifestyle as an ecologist, and her plans for the future. Additionally, Auteri offered insightful information for researching positions online in her field.

Monday, Mar. 6 | Dr. Luke Jacobus
The IUPUC, Division of Science, Assistant Professor of Biology, Dr. Luke Jacobus gave a presentation about his research in entomology. In his lecture, Jacobus shared when and what got him interested in insects, where he went to school, and how he managed to maintain a career in science while having a growing family.

Monday, Mar. 20 | 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. | Room CC170 | Dr. JD Mendez
IUPUC’s, Division of Science, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dr. JD Mendez will speak about his research in chemistry. He currently does work with 3D printers and chitin, a biopolymer. 

Thursday, Mar. 30 | 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. | Summerville Room, CLC 1400 | Dr. Jim Clack
IUPUC’s, Division of Science, Professor, Dr. Jim Clack is scheduled to speak on his research on the functions of the eye. He Clack has dedicated years to his study, and currently, his research interests include the role of GTP-binding proteins, such as Transducin (Gt) a protein found in retinal rods and cones.

Monday, Apr. 10 | 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. | Location: TBD | Andrew Hass
Andrew Hass will speak about his current career with Eli Lilly. Hass will share what involved in his position at ELI Lilly, his career path in becoming an employee, and other career opportunities available his industry.

Thursday, Apr. 13 | 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. | CC170 | Dr. Dimple Hall
Dr. Dimple Hill will discuss her role as a veterinarian at Hope Veterinary Clinic. She will discuss the educational requirements to becoming a veterinarian, a glimpse of her day-to-day activities, and offer advice individuals interested in pursuing a career this field.

Monday, Apr. 24 | 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. | CC170 | Dr. Gary Felsten
Dr. Gary Felsten is the associate dean for academic affairs and the professor of psychology at IUPUC. Felsten will speak about his career role at IUPUC; his research; why he chose to study biology, and offer advice for students.
