Top IUPUI teachers, researchers, mentors and students recognized at Chancellor's Honors Convocation

The outstanding achievement of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis teachers, researchers, mentors, and students were recognized at the annual Chancellor's Academic Honors Convocation in Hine Hall Auditorium.

The convocation celebrates excellence across all areas of IUPUI's mission: teaching and learning; research, scholarship and creative activity; civic engagement; and diversity, collaboration and best practices.

For the second time, the Charles R. Bantz Chancellor's Community Fellowship is being awarded. Created in 2015 in recognition of the former chancellor's leadership and contributions to the campus and community, this fellowship reflects Bantz's dedication to research that creates university-community partnerships and results in community impact.

Gabriel Filippelli, a professor of earth sciences in the School of Science, received the Charles R. Bantz Chancellor's Community Fellowship award of $50,000 for his project titled "Building healthy cities through community-engaged science and action: Getting the lead out." He is seeking to understand the context and causation of lead poisoning in Indianapolis. His research will engage youth leadership fellows and other community partners as citizen-scientists to take action in their neighborhoods to identify and eliminate environmental risks.

The Charles R. Bantz Chancellor's Community Scholar Award of $25,000 was awarded to Carolyn Gentle-Genitty, director of the Bachelor of Social Work program and associate professor of social work in the School of Social Work, for her research titled "Pathways to school success: Evaluation and support program (ESP) partnership with community partner Warren Township schools." She is passionate about the number of K-12 students who are suspended or expelled for disruptive behaviors, often without recourse or interventions, and her research focuses on working with schools to create systems that re-engage students in a supportive environment so they can return to school better prepared to succeed.

  • Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching -- Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, Division of Liberal Arts, Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus.
  • Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Multicultural Teaching -- Jennifer Guiliano, School of Liberal Arts.
  • Chancellor's Diversity Scholar Award -- Modupe Labode, School of Liberal Arts.

Awards honoring research work and their recipients:

  • Bantz-Petronio Translating Research Into Practice Faculty Award -- Mark Kelley, School of Medicine.
  • Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Research -- Cade Bradley-Thomas Jacobs, School of Informatics and Computing.

Contributions by campus mentors to strengthen IUPUI's academic reputation are also being recognized:

  • Alvin S. Bynum Award for Excellence in Academic Mentoring for faculty -- Razi Nalim, School of Engineering and Technology.
  • Alvin S. Bynum Award for Excellence in Academic Mentoring for staff -- Brooke Moreland, Division of Undergraduate Education.

Awards presented to recognize contributions in civic engagement:

  • Chancellor's Faculty Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement -- Scott Pegg, School of Liberal Arts.
  • Chancellor's Community Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement -- Edna Martin Christian Center.
  • Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., M.D. Experience Excellence Award -- David Burr, School of Medicine; Peggy Daniels Lee, Kelley School of Business.

Recipients of the Trustees' Teaching Award are also being recognized at this event.
