If you’ve considered joining the IUPUC Honor’s Program, now’s the time to apply! Applications are due June 15.

If you’re an incoming freshman with a high school GPA of 3.75 (unweighted) or current IUPUC student with a 3.5, you’re eligible for the honors program. All eligible submissions are accepted to the program, and the top merit winners are awarded a scholarship that’s renewable each year.

“The program offers an opportunity for student learning that is broader and more challenging, as it allows students to engage in a deeper level of academic inquiry in their coursework,” says IUPUC Honors Director Stephanie Serriere. “Honors students are able to participate in collaborative research, service and experiential learning, generally choosing one course per semester to dive into more depth with a faculty mentor.”

The Honors Program is guided by three core values:

  1. Academic quality and rigor
  2. Advanced opportunities for students
  3. Scholarship and research

The program requires 24 credit hours of designated honors classes. As a result, it’s ideal for incoming freshmen, who can take one 3-credit honors class of their choosing each semester; it’s also doable for sophomores, who will need to double up some semesters.

To designate a class as honors, honors scholars ask their instructor at the beginning of the semester if they will support them doing a course-related project that allows them to dive into the content in more depth. These instructors taught one or more classes with an honors designation in the previous school year.

Unlike programs at other universities, IUPUC allows honors students a lot of flexibility and creativity in selecting their honors courses.

Yamileth Martinez, a former honors scholar, noted, “Being in the honors program gives you an opportunity to get to work with faculty one-on-one and build relationships beyond the classroom.”

In addition to the opportunity for a scholarship, one-on-one time with instructors, and researching topics of their choosing, honors scholars are awarded a medallion and receive an honors distinction on their diploma upon completion.

“Becoming an honors scholar demonstrates the ability to accept extra work and challenges, to perform independently, to make a commitment and follow through to the completion,” Serriere said.
